Magic Vision, where Augmented Reality meets Disney Theme Parks


In preparation for the 2012 ImagiNations competition, I started working early to design an application for smart phone technology using augmented reality. The purpose of the app is to help the user navigate their way around Disney parks and gives the user the opportunity to mold his or her ideal Disney experience by using their time more efficiently. As the user pans their device's camera around (up to a full 360 degrees), the screen would populate with varying attraction information including wait times, fast pass availability, rider height minimums, descriptions of the attractions, and available dining options. Unfortunately, Disney changed the parameters of the competition this year to only accept ideas/designs that could, in essence, be implemented on the moon

Using object-oriented code, we designed a working model for calculating engine data for a turbofan engine. In order to accurately output the correct thrust, thrust specific fuel consumption (TSFC), engine noise, and CO2 emmisions throughout the flight in our senior aircraft design project, an acurate engine model had to be designed. This was accomplished by analyzing a non-afterburning turbofan without aid of ideal assumptions. Calculations were performed at each stage of the cycle: freestream, ram compression, deceleration, fan, fan exhaust, compressor, combustor, turbine, core nozzle, and core exhaust. Once these baselines were established, the model was refined to meet the specifications of high bypass current generation turbofan engines. With these modifications, the code produced thrust and TSFC values that were comparable to many current engine designs. Finally, the bypass ratio and weight equations were fitted to match that of the selected engine, the Pratt and Whitney PW1000G geared turbofan. Using this method also allowed the engine to be scaled to create a fan diameter based on any thrust requirement at any condition, including the maximum needed to complete the mission.

The program creates the geometry and simulates the mission. The sizing code is controlled by two for loops, one controlling aspect ratio and one controlling the wing loading. A gross weight estimate is also provided. The loop converges when the gross weight estimate is within 0.01% of the actual gross weight found at the end of the mission. The major upgrades to the sizing code include the engine model, and a more accurate engine re-sizing loop, noise calculations, Brent's method for convergence, and the use of object oriented programming.

Sorcerer’s Apprentice: The Ride is an interactive attraction featuring a one-of-a-kind motion capture system for an even more enhanced guest experience. This first ever designed system has guests wearing a specially equipped motion tracking glove when they first board the indoor rollercoaster-type attraction. Wearing these magic gloves it allows the system to constantly monitor the current position and movements of the guests hand and fingers in real-time. Using this simple motion tracking technology the attraction can now feature a very fun, unique and enjoyable guest interactive experience never before seen anywhere else in the world. On the attraction itself the guests will travel through New York City on a magical quest to defeat evil and free their mentor from harm. This attraction is intended to be enjoyed by an entire family of all ages. The attraction will challenge guests by offering different difficulty settings, which dictate the accuracy needed for the program to register the hand movements, or spells which consist of easy to do motions taught to the guest as the ride progresses. These difficulty settings will be locked in by the ride attendant, based on his or her judgment of the guest’s capabilities. A competitive scoring system is used to designate the “Prime Merlinian”, the best sorcerer of each eight person group. More points are awarded for finding the hidden "Mickey's" throughout the floor plan and performing magic with higher skill. These factors are used to provide a different experience for the guest every time they ride. The ride also features a dynamic ending encouraging teamwork, where the combined groups proficiency determines the fate of the main character

Echovoice G19 Pandora

Pandora on the Logitech G19 using the Fast Fourier Transform Algorithm


Using source code from the OpenPandora project I was able to get Pandora fully working in a c# WPF application. Instead of just displaying the normal Pandora application on the LCD, which would not fit, I wrote my own GUI for Pandora. The GUI features a fully working VU-Meter which is calculated based on the audio output signal from the computer and then run through FFT code. FFT allows for the various frequencies to be pulled from the live audio. This data is then displayed on the screen as the song is playing. The application also has to option to blink and even change the key color based on the audio. The end result is a brilliant effect that will really impress your friends.

Echovoice G15 Logitech Color Picker

G19 Easy to use Color Picker, with Automatic Purple Correction


About G19 Color Picker Project

After I received the brand new G19 keyboard from Logitech, the first feature I wanted to play around with was the custom-color character backlight. I have a blue Razor mouse and I wanted to see if I could get the two blue colors to match. Unfortunately due to a "low priority" bug in the software/hardware for the G19, blue actually looks purple. Not only was this an issue, but it seemed like a chore to change the color of the keys on a whim. Hence, Echovoice G19 Color Picker was born. It includes automatic purple correction so you can use real RGB codes to light up your favorite color. Enjoy!

About Aircraft Design Project

As part of an aerospace engineering undergraduate design project, a group of us from Arizona State University were assigned the task of optimizing and designing a transportation aircraft given unique design constraints. The constraints were specific to the type of aircraft we needed to design as well as constraints set forth by the Federal Aviation Requirements, FARs. Finally, the aircraft had to be able to perform and complete an assigned air flight mission.

The only job I have ever wanted since I was a kid was to become a Disney Imagineer. This competition seemed like the only way into this field of work. So I tried out with a two person team starting in about November of 2009. We got to top 15 in the competition, semi-finalists I am to assume but we did not receive the invitation to actually go and visit WDI over the summer. The new version supports a new way to create statistical information about your game play. It includes an open source plugin system so anyone wanting to provide support for a particular game can do so easily. Allowing developers to build plugin's so their game is supported. It can support any game with log file support.
The new version is also non-G15 dependent, meaning it can collect and display gaming statistics within its own GUI and no external LCD is required. That way your (non-G15) friends can track their stats and compare their statistical information with yours. However G15 users will have many features not available to others. Future versions will also support online stats access, allowing you to share your stats with anyone who has internet access around the world. Also further down the road new SIG generators, giving your forum posts detailed info on your frags and gameplay stats...
